Update Final:

Rough thumb of the first American shot at Yorktown, fired by Washington. Story goes, it "interrupted" some british officers who had been dining in the next house over. So I've taken some liberties.

I've been looking at a lot of N.C Wyeth and Mead Schaeffer paintings for this.

Roman Polanski's "Macbeth" is a waste of time. Except for the last 20 minutes, where Jon Finch steals the entire movie and blows your mind.

I have so much artwork that's been done between May and now. ( +40 paintings.) And then I think to myself, "Why yes you have been productive." And then I look on the internet and realize I haven't posted in 2 months due to not making any personal art....oops.

So you can expect some Yorktown Campaign art soon, along with some Iorveth and Witcher art as well on the side.

Because I'm back on the personal art horse and apologize for the drought.

Loki underpainting. i'm on a Marvel kick and it will probably last for months. i'm trying to introduce more color to my work. It's currently a little wild, but all my underpaintings usually are until I start rendering them. Most of the tones are just markers for the lighting situation.

Washington- early 40's

I love this for a number of set reasons. I've been trying to escape the generic digital feel to my work and I think I'm slowly getting there. I've read so much on him, that I feel like I could paint his actual character. I can't say how or why this was made, only that it feels right.

I've also been wanting to do a portrait of Washington for almost 4 years now, but have been too intimidated to get it wrong. That sounds silly, I know, but I'm just so sick of all the classical paintings of him as an aged man with animal teeth. He wasn't always that way.

Alright, I need to get this out of my system, or I'll continue sitting here and do nothing but look up programming and engines.

I remember playing my first video game in the 90's as pure entertainment, hell we all did. But if you think about it, video games have come so far. Something parents scowl at and forbid their children to throw hours of their life away in some fictitious screen world that will kill their eyesight in twenty years. If we look at the history of entertainment, from plays evolving into film, video games are the next step into Escapism, which seems like something that has been very natural to humans since the beginning. It's how we get through the week.

Statistically, the video game industry has passed the film industry in revenue by a large margin, and it's not because kids are spending daddy's money. It's a market that is beginning to apply itself to all ages, and has proven itself to be more innovative and interactive than any other source of prescripted- visual material.

We can now have a pet tiger and teach it tricks while rolling all over the floor, we can overthrow autocratic and tyrannic regimes.... in space. Hell we can lose Bunker Hill as many times as we want and build Paris.

It's just amazing what they're doing with technology and how they're catering to human interaction.

A role playing game that would have evil, good, and neutral responses to a block-headed character, in a game that had 2 endings, was once revolutionary. Now we see games that have 13 endings, heavy and responsive diplomacy, and in depth storytelling. All accompanied by an overly intelligent build, made to deliver a responsive game play that tailors itself to the user. These days, rather than looking at a game to play for sheer entertainment, it's become equally interesting to see how they've made it.

I've spent some time in the studio with 3-d modelers, riggers, and animators. And you wouldn't believe the frustration and hard work that goes into making a presentation look perfect and lifelike. Not only lifelike, but beautiful. When you look at the people who have spent years developing these things; animators, concept artists, producers, technical directors, 3-D modelers, programmers, the list goes on. But you begin to realize how much serious work and training goes into making these "atrocious" things that consume the life of your child and any chance they have for Vitamin D.

Ignoring marketing (which seems to be the same as hiring an art rep), the video game, is in fact an art form. People make terrible art all the time, and then they make beautiful, innovative art. It's all the same. But it's still about delivering a translatable and interactive experience to an audience. One that has been tailored to understand human interaction and envelop it.

I've spent hours looking through Washington's letters to find a less than prepared statement. It's hard to find after Yorktown. the man was so engaged with classical poetry (i'm convinced) that he was convinced that the key to immortality was via posterity and poets. Not through Religion.
Naturally, after Yorktown, everything he wrote and recorded was orchestrated and tailored for future generations to dissect. Still, his personal letters hold some bite and honesty to them. This is just an example. He probably laughed when he said it.

I love history. I really do and I'm sorry I never fell into it earlier. Degree Project has been the coolest thing I have ever done as an artist. And it's nice to know that my art is based on something more than fantasy or a whim. If I look back to my freshman year, I see that it was actually a three year build up to this senior year explosion of the Revolutionary War. Washington was in my freshman "journey" postcard; the first assignment I ever did for art school. I never thought anything of it.

I wish i had the opportunity sooner to go off and develop a project on something you're wholeheartedly dedicated to without a sane reason in mind.

After reading 10 biographies on Washington, I think it's safe to say that I've passed the border of obsession. Which is fine with me. Because I want to do this for the rest of my life. I make a habit of fiercely promising myself to things until I achieve them or have several consecutive nervous breakdowns, and THEN achieve them.

Three years ago I promised myself that I would become a video game concept artist or die trying.

Too bad.

General Washington is WAY cooler than any space marine.

I'm also the only person who still likes their Degree Project...

and associates it with Mayan Philosophy.
